Chapter Eleven
Treading lightly, Tucker tried to make amends with Alyssa. She wasnât mad. Worse, she was hurt and disappointed. His behavior had humiliated her in front of all her friends, something she didnât think could be fixed. He still couldnât believe it had come to this.
The morning after the disastrous autumn harvest celebration, he tried to talk to her. But the entire time, she looked as though she was about to cry. So heâd allowed her to go to Kateâs for the day.
Feeling more alone than heâd ever been in his life, he wandered into Alyssaâs room after she left. Neatly hung in her closet were clothes heâd never seen before. Her T-shirts and overalls were still there, making the comparison pitiful. Sitting next to her extra pair of tennis shoes, he saw new shoes as well.
On top of the dresser, sheâd arranged some barrettes, along with nail polish and some sort of lipstick. He still thought of Alyssa as his baby. Had he been so shuttered in his grief that heâd missed the changes in her?
He assumed Kate had bought all the new things. Apparently, she understood more about his daughter than he did. Now he couldnât stop wondering if all this had been right in front of him. Alyssa had never complained, never asked for anything. And that made him feel even worse.
Sheâd barely spoken since Friday night. At least to him. Sheâd gone to church the day before, then come home and stayed in her room. Now she was at school.
Tucker wasnât used to asking for help. Heâd never gone to a counselor. Before Shelleyâs death, his counsel had been his minister, but that wasnât an option any longer. Still, he needed someone to talk to.
He glanced at his watch. Eight oâclock Monday morning. With the pit in his stomach growing, he called Kate and asked if she had some time to talk. His deputy, Owen, had agreed to man the office.
A few weeks ago, heâd hoped to get his life back on track, be a good father. And now he just hoped he hadnât lost Alyssa.
