Chapter Eleven

Treading lightly, Tucker tried to make amends with Alyssa. She wasn’t mad. Worse, she was hurt and disappointed. His behavior had humiliated her in front of all her friends, something she didn’t think could be fixed. He still couldn’t believe it had come to this.

The morning after the disastrous autumn harvest celebration, he tried to talk to her. But the entire time, she looked as though she was about to cry. So he’d allowed her to go to Kate’s for the day.

Feeling more alone than he’d ever been in his life, he wandered into Alyssa’s room after she left. Neatly hung in her closet were clothes he’d never seen before. Her T-shirts and overalls were still there, making the comparison pitiful. Sitting next to her extra pair of tennis shoes, he saw new shoes as well.

On top of the dresser, she’d arranged some barrettes, along with nail polish and some sort of lipstick. He still thought of Alyssa as his baby. Had he been so shuttered in his grief that he’d missed the changes in her?

He assumed Kate had bought all the new things. Apparently, she understood more about his daughter than he did. Now he couldn’t stop wondering if all this had been right in front of him. Alyssa had never complained, never asked for anything. And that made him feel even worse.

She’d barely spoken since Friday night. At least to him. She’d gone to church the day before, then come home and stayed in her room. Now she was at school.

Tucker wasn’t used to asking for help. He’d never gone to a counselor. Before Shelley’s death, his counsel had been his minister, but that wasn’t an option any longer. Still, he needed someone to talk to.

He glanced at his watch. Eight o’clock Monday morning. With the pit in his stomach growing, he called Kate and asked if she had some time to talk. His deputy, Owen, had agreed to man the office.

A few weeks ago, he’d hoped to get his life back on track, be a good father. And now he just hoped he hadn’t lost Alyssa.
